The idea for the Group came from Harold Yates who had gained a wealth of experience from his involvement with a Lancaster Society. Towards the end of 1977 Harold had the thought that surely there must be enough talent to form a group here in Garstang.
Consequently a well attended meeting was held at the Kings Arms where the decision was made to form garstang theatre group. Rehearsals for the first production, a play entitled
"Come Laughing Home" got under way and in 1978 this was presented at the High School. This was followed by a festive production "Merrie Christmas Melodies".
The first musical "oliver" was presented in 1979 in conjunction with the High School - 1988 saw the presentation of the first panto "snow white and the seven dwarfs" which was a huge success. In 1993 the decision was made to adopt the formula which still exists today of a panto in Autumn followed by a musical in Spring.
Over the past 31 years many hundreds of children and adults (in some cases full families) have been members of the group. We have an ongoing policy of encouraging young people to participate in our productions whenever possible - we believe the continuing success of the group is assured by coaching the talents of our younger members.
The Group is managed on behalf of the members by a small committee who give freely of their time and experience towards ensuring its continuing success. We are also members of NODA (National Operatic & Dramatic Association) and give their long service badges/medals as appropriate. The Group/individual members have received NODA Awards for acting/scenery and staging.
Our members come from all walks of life - each one bringing their own individual talent - all of which are important to the continuing success of garstang theatre group.
